What Is Culture Shock & How To Manage It

Moving to a new country or immersing oneself in a different culture can be an exciting yet challenging experience. Say hello to Culture Shock! It’s that moment of utter disorientation, uneasiness, and bewilderment that you experience when you step into a new culture. Don’t worry, you’re not alone! Everyone goes through it, and we’ve got your back!

In this post, we’re going to share our personal experiences with you and explore Culture Shock, its stages, and how to overcome it with humor. Let’s dive into the unknown and tackle it like a boss!

First Things First, What Exactly is Culture Shock?

Culture shock can be quite intense and overwhelming. While it might sound like something that cultures do to outsiders, it’s actually the opposite. Culture shock hits you when you immerse yourself into a new culture, and everything seems different, unfamiliar, and overwhelming. It’s that moment when you realize that you’re not in Kansas anymore, Toto!

Stages of Culture Shock: Let’s Get Real!

We’ve all turned into Keanu Reeves at some point in our lives and wondered, “Whoa, what’s going on?” Culture Shock can be super intense, but knowing the stages can help you prepare mentally and emotionally.

Stage 1: The Honeymoon Stage: “Everything is Amazing!”

The first stage of culture shock is like the honeymoon phase in a relationship. Everything is new, shiny, and exciting. You devour the culture like a croissant fresh out of the oven. You enjoy the novelty of experiencing something different and love the fact that you’re bold enough to take the leap to a new country.

This is an exhilarating stage. It is so much fun to be somewhere new and take in the fresh sites, smells, and tastes. Savor this phase as you would a honeymoon phase in a relationship. Dive into it and enjoy!

Stage 2: Frustration Stage: “Why aren’t things like the way they were back home?”

After the honeymoon stage ends, you step into the second stage, the Frustration stage. You may wonder why the heck things aren’t working out the way they did back home. You might feel like you’re missing out on precious things like your favorite TV shows, foods, or people. You’re trying hard to adjust, but things seem awkward and frustrating. This can be even more intense if you are in a country that doesn’t speak your native language.

There were times when I would get home from class and put headphones in to listen to music in English. My brain was exhausted by trying to understand the hours of Spanish I had just taken in. I also really wanted an apple martini!

Stage 3: The Adjustment Stage: “Let’s Find a Middle Ground!”

After you’ve been immersed in the culture long enough, you’ll start to adapt and become resilient. You’re less frustrated, and you’ve started to embrace your new normal. You’re now comfortable with the concept that things are different. It’s as if you’ve met the culture halfway, and the culture has reciprocated. Congratulations, you’ve made it to the Adjustment stage!

Stage 4: Acceptance Stage: “I am starting to feel like I am at home!”

In the final stage of Culture Shock, you’ll experience Acceptance: The “I am starting to feel at home!” stage. You finally start to get it and appreciate the host culture. You get that their way isn’t better or worse, simply different. At this stage, you’ve not only learned to accept new cultural differences, but you’ve embraced them too!

This is the best stage, in my opinion. It feels like home and you are finally feeling more in your element. This phase is harder to put into words but is the most comforting of them all.

So How Can We Overcome Culture Shock?

Laughing during cultural immersion doesn’t mean that you’re not taking it seriously. It means that you’re enjoying your daily experiences, even if they’re not always pleasant. Embrace the hilarity, and you’ll find that dealing with the emotional and mental effects of Culture Shock is a lot easier. So here are a few tips to help you overcome Culture Shock while remaining lighthearted!

Tip 1: Make fun of yourself

Nobody is perfect. Don’t take yourself too seriously, be humble, and make fun of yourself. You can turn awkward cultural encounters into comedy or create ridiculous nicknames for the strange experiences you have. Laughing at yourself means that you’re open to learning, and your resilience will make the transition easier.

Tip 2: Bring humor into language barriers

Don’t be embarrassed if you don’t know how to say something! Make it fun by developing your jargon or tackling the accent with enthusiasm. If you use the wrong word, don’t stress out, it will be a fun story later, and I promise you will not make the mistake again! Speak the wrong words on purpose or try your best to use slang and jokes in the new language.

Tip 3: Find Ways To Remain Cheerful In Strange Situations

Culture Shock often exposes us to bizarre and awkward situations and events. These situations might seem strange at first, but stay positive and open-minded. Laugh at the oddities and awkward moments; it’s the best way to gain acceptance quickly.

Tip 4: Engage in Cultural Exchange Programs

Socialize with locals and their cultural habits when making new friends. Learn from them and exchange cultural experiences. You’ll be amazed by how much they’ll appreciate your interest in their culture. They’ll even be thrilled to hear commentary about their customs and beliefs!

Tip 5: Enjoy The Celebrities

Get entertained by the local celebrities of your new country, be it pop stars, actors, or politicians! Everything that you learn about a new culture is exciting! Who knows, you might get surprised by how much you enjoy the things you were judging initially.

Tip 6: Join Social Media Communities with a Sense of Humor

Social media is a great way to connect with people from all over the world. Find online communities with the same cultural background and sense of humor as you. They’re the perfect spot for sharing the quirks and oddities of your new culture.

Culture shock plays a significant part in the life of many people who move to new countries. By recognizing its stages and embracing the fun and humor, individuals can navigate culture shock with greater ease. We hope that this post has been both educational and entertaining, and has reminded you to embrace the unknown with fun and positivity.

Ready for your next adventure? Where would you move if there were no limitations?

Paseando en Huelva – Writings From The Past

I wrote the following piece in May of 2007, while I was still an exchange student at La Universidad de Huelva. I was studying abroad in Spain, and I had been there for about 3 or 4 months at that point. It was my first time travelling to Europe and I had done so solo. While it was scary and daunting at first, it soon grew into being one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I will forever be grateful for all that I learned during my time there.

As I read through it again, all these years later, I am immediately transported back to that walk, back to that time. It was a time of self discovery and exploration. I learned so much about myself, my dreams, my strength, and my passions. This is a good reminder of why I am doing what I am doing now. Why I encourage my students, readers, and fellow hodophiles to break free of their comfort zones, to open their minds, and explore the world. It is also a big part of why I created Stamped Adventures and I am so glad that I came across this writing so that I can share it with all of you.

While the prose isn’t perfect, there is a speckling of Spanish words thrown in, as well as a few inside jokes, I love what it signifies to me and I hope it gives readers a glimpse into my past and shows why I am so passionate about what I do.

– Dani

“While taking one of my numerous walks that, at times, don´t stray from Avenida Andalucía, (aka Av. de cholesterol for reasons as such), I try to soak in every ounce of energy that surrounds me:

The slightly strong breeze blowing my hair into my face, tempting me once again to contemplate making bald beautiful; The salty smell of the air that is occasionally overpowered by homecooked smells escaping from the windows above provoking a growl in my stomach; The, not so various, shapes of people partaking in their nightly jog, utilizing park benches to strengthen their abdominals, or to stretch their tired muscles; The loud buzz of motorbikes racing by, temporarily interrupting the chatter of people describing their daily activities to their families in a language no longer foreign to me. Families are always outside taking in the fresh night air, simply enjoying the company of their neighbors while taking a ´café con leche´ as the children play nearby.

Today is a bit special, in the fact that it is the day everyone returns from ´El Rocío´. Because of this, I am blessed with the colorful sight of children still adorned in their gypsy dress. To my left, parents are strolling, baby girl at hand struggling to perfect her first steps in the outside world. Couples are everywhere, arm in arm, hand in hand, lip to lip. There is an open display of love here, as affection is definitely not limited to the privacy of the home. I don´t only speak of younger people paseando arm in arm, but of individuals of a vast age range.

As I smile to myself, a passerby comments on my quiet observing, telling me it should be my career. His thick andaluz accent is on of the more difficult ones to decipher. I smile accordingly as I greet him. He nods with understanding and his amused eyes are accompanied with a ´sta luego as he continues on his walk. A young guy stops to call my attention, and when I look up he has a confused look on his face as he realizes he has mistaken me for someone else. This is a rare occurrence considering the fact that my blonde hair is as rare here as a stoplight in a small town.

My thoughts are interrupted by a loud ´pop´ as someone decides to celebrate with fireworks. There is such a healthy mix of old culture and modern living here in southern Spain. The more I experience and the more time I spend here, the more I grow to love this place. This small city that I had never before knew to exist, I now happily call my home, even if only temporarily.

It is a bittersweet thought really. The peace I have found here, I recently let multiply by finally giving in to the pure goodness of people and life. A goodness and felicidad that I once refused to put my trust in. I now realize that if you put all of your energy into constantly watching your back to avoid the inevitable sharp and painful knives, or if you are constantly analyzing the ´what-could-happen´ thoughts of the future, you truly miss out on the amazements and pure joys that surround you in the present moment.

Sitting here on this worn out bench, surrounded by a rainbow of flowers, exotic palm trees, and up-turned pines, I contemplate, not where I came from yesterday or where I am going tomorrow, but who I am now. And, you know, for once I am content with my self-given response. I have a head filled with a plethora of new information, a heart surrounded by honest love, and a body racing with indescribable passion for life and for those who have entered into mine.

Of course, my content heart may have little to do with this city or the people that I have met, but much more with the continuously growing knowledge of myself and what kind of woman I aspire to be. I end as the casi-full moon brightens against the sky fading into darkness. As far as Huelva goes, I can return; As far as the special people in my life, we will keep in touch; As far as mi misma, I plan to enjoy life whole-heartedly, each precious moment here on Earth that I am blessed with.”

Pittsburgh Date Ideas: 4 Romantic Locations

Living close to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has allowed my husband and I to expand our options on a variety of things such as shopping and doctor appointments, but our favorite things to do in the city end up on our ‘date night’ agenda.

Pittsburgh offers a plethora of romantic settings and activities for couples looking to enjoy a memorable date night. Whether you’re seeking a cozy evening or an adventurous outing, the city has something for everyone. Because the city has an ‘industrial’ vibe to it, some people will discount it when thinking of romantic evenings, but they are doing themselves a disservice. I love Pittsburgh and am excited to share some of the things that stood out to me as great dates! Here are four romantic date night ideas in Pittsburgh that are sure to spark love and create lasting memories.

Romantic Dinner Cruise on the Three Rivers:

Pittsburgh is the city of bridges because of where it sits. That means a lot of water views and a variety of boat ride activities. If you are looking for a romantic boat ride you can book a dinner cruise. Embark on a magical evening aboard one of the Gateway Clipper fleet and sail along the beautiful Three Rivers. Indulge in a gourmet meal while enjoying breathtaking views of Pittsburgh’s skyline illuminated against the night sky. Cruise options range from elegant riverboats to intimate sailboats, allowing you to find the perfect ambiance for your romantic night. Let the gentle sway of the water and the city lights set the stage for a truly unforgettable experience.

Stroll Through the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens:

This is one of our most frequented ‘dates’ and one of my favorites. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens is the ideal place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and immerse yourselves in the tranquility of nature. This enchanting oasis offers an ideal setting for a romantic date day out. Take a leisurely stroll through the beautifully landscaped gardens, mesmerized by the colorful blooms and aromatic scents. Explore the serene Japanese garden or enjoy the exotic beauty of the tropical forest. You can even grab a coffee, a beer and/or lunch during your visit. The café sources their food from a garden grown in the conservatory.

Phipps is especially cozy during the colder winter months when you are daydreaming about summer. It is open all year long and has a mesmerizing winter wonderland setup, complete with hot cocoa around Christmas time as well. With its romantic ambiance and natural wonders, Phipps Conservatory is a surefire way to ignite the sparks of romance.

Picnic in Schenley Park:

Embrace the beauty of the outdoors with a romantic picnic in Schenley Park. This expansive urban park provides a serene escape from the busy city, offering lush greenery and picturesque views. It includes 456 acres of trails, woods, and attractions. Find a secluded spot under a shady tree or near the enchanting Panther Hollow Lake, spread out a blanket, and enjoy a delicious spread of your favorite foods. The Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy takes pride in maintaining the park and there is no charge to enjoy this area, so if you are looking for something inexpensive, scenic, and romantic this is a great option.

Rooftop Date Night at a Downtown Bar:

Elevate your date night experience by enjoying a romantic evening on one of Pittsburgh’s rooftop bars. Feel on top of the world as you sip your favorite cocktails or indulge in a glass of wine, while overlooking the stunning city skyline.

There are several rooftop bars to choose from depending on what part of the city you are in. If you are in the mood for Mediterranean food and a trendy vibe, Over Eden is one of the top spots. If you are more drawn to a rustic-chic style and hearty meatballs or pizza, then you are looking for Il Tetto at Sienna Mercato. The Biergarten Hotel Monaco has your typical beer garden setting with European-style food. These are just a few examples of the rooftop experiences you can find in Pittsburgh.

Regardless of where you go you will have a great view to watch as the sun set and the transformation of Pittsburgh into a dazzling spectacle of twinkling lights. The combination of panoramic views, stylish ambiance, and delicious drinks creates an atmosphere that is perfect for a romantic night out.

And, hey, even if you are rocking the single life right now, these ideas are also great for girls’ nights out or to have a solo date with yourself! I’ve had many a night out on my own as well as with friends.

From enchanting gardens to scenic river cruises, Pittsburgh offers a range of romantic date night ideas for couples. Whether you prefer a leisurely evening exploring nature or a glamorous rooftop experience, this vibrant city provides the perfect backdrop for a good time.

Let me know in the comments if you have been to any of these places or if you plan to check them out. I would love to hear about your experiences!

Solo Travel Tips For The Female Traveler

Traveling solo can be an empowering and enriching experience for women, allowing them to explore new destinations and cultures on their own terms. However, it’s crucial to prioritize safety while embarking on these adventures. I was aware of some of these before I traveled solo for the first time, but others weren’t as prominent in my mind. By implementing a few key safety hacks, solo female travelers can enhance their security and enjoy their journeys with peace of mind.

By recounting the challenges, tips, and lessons learned during my solo travels, I hope to provide you with practical tips, strategies, and advice that can empower and guide you in your own journeys.

Research and Plan Ahead:
Before traveling to a new destination, conduct thorough research to understand its safety situation. Learn about local customs, cultural norms, and any potential risks. Choose accommodations in safe areas, and familiarize yourself with reliable transportation options. Planning ahead can help you make informed decisions and avoid unnecessary risks.

One of the things that I find most valuable out of this is familiarizing myself with the area in general. A simple way to do this is to have a map, either physical or downloaded to your phone, as a backup in case you find yourself without service. Also, have notes with emergency phone numbers and addresses so you don’t have to search for them in the moment. Preparedness will save you so much time and headache.

Blend In with the Local Culture:
To minimize attention and potential harassment, adapt your clothing choices to match the local culture and customs. Avoid wearing flashy jewelry or carrying expensive items that may attract unwanted attention. Blending in helps you maintain a low profile and increases your safety while exploring.

I don’t say this to dampen your style, but the truth is that tourists often look like tourists. They stand out simply because their fashion doesn’t match the local style. Most of the time, you shouldn’t have any issues, but if you want to limit the risk even more, blending in is a good way to do it.

Trust Your Intuition:
Intuition is a powerful tool for personal safety. If a situation or person feels off or uncomfortable, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the environment. Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded places or unfamiliar areas. Listening to your intuition can help you avoid potential dangers.

I know that it has been ingrained in us to be polite and to try not to offend others, especially as women, but if your internal alarms are going off….listen to them. It is better to be ‘rude’ and safe than ‘polite’ and in danger. If it helps, it is unlikely that you will ever see the people you may ‘offend’ again so f*ck it. Safety first.

face, train, waiting-1382023.jpg

Share Your Itinerary:
Keep a trusted friend or family member informed about your travel plans. Share your itinerary, including flight details, accommodation addresses, and any scheduled activities. Regularly update them about your whereabouts, so someone knows where you are at all times. This ensures someone is aware of your location and can provide assistance if needed.

Another thing I have been doing when traveling solo, is having my location enabled and shared with my husband and sister. If you are comfortable with this, it is a great way for people to know where you are if they need to find you.

Use Secure Transportation:
When using public transportation, choose well-known and reputable options. Avoid traveling alone late at night if possible. If you need to take a taxi, use licensed cabs or rely on reputable ride-hailing services. Consider sharing your ride details with a friend or family member for an extra layer of safety.

Do your research on this ahead of time and have options ready. Read reviews and make notes on any suggestions from people who might have traveled to that region before you.

Stay Connected:
Ensure you have a reliable means of communication throughout your journey. Carry a fully charged mobile phone with emergency contacts saved, including local authorities. Consider purchasing a local SIM card or a portable Wi-Fi device to stay connected to the internet, enabling you to access maps, emergency services, and stay in touch with loved ones.

One thing I always carry while traveling is my power bank. You can get a heavy duty one that lasts for days so you always have reliable power for your cell phone. (I have examples in my Amazon Storefront if you are looking for a starting point)

Secure Your Belongings:
Protect your valuables by using a combination of strategies. Invest in a quality travel lock to secure your luggage. Consider using a slash-proof bag or backpack, and keep your belongings close to you, especially in crowded areas. Utilize a money belt or hidden pouch to store important documents and cash discreetly.

Don’t keep your wallet or phone in your back pocket, keep your purse/bag in front of your body rather than at the side or back. Keep in mind that thieves know these tricks too so the idea is to make it as complicated as you can for them to get to your valuables. They will seek out the easiest targets, so do your best to not be one of them.

go pro, pen, notepad-1478810.jpg

Be Mindful of Alcohol Consumption:
While enjoying local nightlife or socializing, be cautious about your alcohol intake. Excessive drinking can impair judgment and make you more vulnerable to dangerous situations. Always keep an eye on your drink, and never accept beverages from strangers. If you choose to drink, do so responsibly and be aware of your surroundings.

If you forget and leave your drink unattended, ditch it and get a new one. It is better safe than sorry in these situations.

I truly believe that solo female travel can be a transformative experience, and prioritizing safety is essential to fully enjoy the journey. By following these safety hacks, female travelers can enhance their personal security, boost confidence, and have unforgettable adventures while exploring the world. Remember, preparation, situational awareness, and trusting your intuition are key to staying safe while traveling alone.

One last tip that often gets forgotten is to stay aware of your surroundings! If you are going to look at your phone, or take a call, it is a good idea to find a spot where you aren’t going to be snuck up on. For example, stand against a building so anyone that is going to get near you will be coming from the front. Also, make sure to look up and around often so that you aren’t a target because you look distracted.

Did I miss anything that you think should be on this list? Post it in the comment section so we can collectively create a source for our fellow female hodophiles to refer back to.

From Bucket List to Live List: A Mindset Shift

In a world brimming with opportunities and experiences waiting to be explored, the concept of the “bucket list” has long been popular. However, as we evolve and seek more positivity in our lives, a new approach called the “Live List” is emerging. The Live List embodies a fresh perspective, encouraging individuals to embrace life’s adventures with an optimistic and enthusiastic outlook. Rather than focus on our mortality, let’s focus on the ‘life’ part of living.

Petra in Jordan

On top of bringing a negative connotation to the idea of living out your wildest dreams, the term “bucket list” can inadvertently create a sense of pressure and overwhelm. The rigid nature of a fixed list can lead to disappointment and a feeling of failure if all items are not accomplished within a specific timeframe. This pressure can detract from the enjoyment of the experiences and hinder the ability to be present in the moment.

In a world where the pursuit of happiness and personal fulfillment takes center stage, the concept of a Live List has emerged as a refreshing and transformative approach. Unlike traditional bucket lists that focus on material achievements and checked-off goals, Live Lists represent a new mindset that encourages individuals to embrace life’s adventures with positivity and enthusiasm.

At its core, a Live List is a compilation of experiences and aspirations that prioritize personal growth, meaningful connections, and the pursuit of joy. It transcends the mere act of crossing items off a list and shifts the focus towards fully immersing oneself in the richness of life.

The Live List mindset is rooted in the belief that life is a continuous journey of exploration and self-discovery. It invites individuals to live intentionally, to savor each moment, and to cultivate a deep appreciation for the present. Rather than fixating on an endpoint or a finite set of goals, the Live List mindset encourages individuals to embrace the process, to be open to new opportunities, and to find joy in the unfolding adventure that life offers.

With Live Lists, the emphasis is on experiences rather than possessions. It encourages individuals to seek out activities and adventures that align with their passions and values. Whether it’s traveling to new destinations, learning a new skill, or immersing oneself in a new culture, Live Lists prioritize the accumulation of memories and personal growth over the accumulation of material possessions.

Another key aspect of the Live List mindset is the recognition of the power of positivity. It encourages individuals to adopt a positive outlook, to cultivate gratitude, and to appreciate the simple pleasures that life has to offer. By focusing on the positive aspects of each experience, individuals can enhance their overall well-being, nurture their mental health, and find fulfillment in the smallest of moments.

Moreover, Live Lists embrace flexibility and adaptability. They recognize that life is fluid, and priorities and desires may change over time. By allowing for adjustments and embracing new opportunities as they arise, Live Lists enable individuals to remain open to unexpected experiences and to evolve along with their own personal journey.

In essence, the Live List mindset offers a fresh and empowering perspective on living life to the fullest. It encourages individuals to prioritize experiences, personal growth, and connection, while fostering a positive outlook and an appreciation for the present moment. By embracing a Live List mindset, individuals can unlock a world of endless possibilities, enrich their lives, and create lasting memories that will resonate for years to come.

While I don’t think that the term “bucket list” is a bad one to use, I much prefer the excitement for life that the term “live list” brings to me, personally. It may be different for you, and that is OK! I’d love to hear from you about your thoughts on this! Do you think the term “bucket list” is more your speed? Why or why not?

A few things that are on my personal Live List are to write a book, travel across the USA via RV, create a community of hodophiles and go on retreats together, run a BnB for creatives, skydive, become a certified scuba diver, and to live in Spain again. This short list is only a fraction of what is on my list, but they are the ones that I am most excited about. What can I say? I am multi-passionate! 🙂

What would you add to your own Live List? I believe that every individual has unique aspirations and desires that contribute to a fulfilling and meaningful life. Whether it’s a thrilling adventure, a personal milestone, a dream destination, or a transformative experience, I want to know what ignites your passion and sparks your curiosity.

So, take a moment to reflect and share with me: What experiences, goals, or adventures would you add to your own Live List? Feel free to let your imagination run wild and think outside the box. Your input may inspire others in our community to explore new possibilities and embark on their own transformative journeys.

Please leave your responses in the comments section below. I can’t wait to hear what exciting additions you would make to your Live List!

4 Incredible Countries That Will Pay You To Move There

Does the idea of living abroad entice you, but you aren’t sure where to start? Here are 4 countries that will pay you to move there. While this list isn’t exhaustive, it will give you a head start on the research required to take that leap into moving abroad.

Chile

If you identify as an adventurer and an entrepreneur, and you want to move abroad, then Chile should top your list of places to move to. While it is narrow from east to west, it is a long country from north to south. What this means is that it has a diverse group of climates and geographies. These vary greatly from one end to the other. Because of this, Chile is well known for its adventure tourism. While also has some of the clearest night skies in the Southern Hemisphere. If your jam is stargazing or astrophotography, then it is the place to be. The largest astronomical project on Earth is located in the Atacama desert. With sand dunes, rivers, mountains, glaciers and coastline, if you are someone who gets a thrill out of ramped up experiences, Chile has what you need.

Chile is a unique South American country that offers so much. It is a popular destination for nature enthusiasts, wine connoisseurs, foodies, and adventure seekers. Even in its popularity, it is still a relatively ‘unexplored’ destination. There are areas of the country where you could find yourself to be the only foreigner around. With that being said, the people are friendly, it is relatively safe, and it is easy to get around. If exploration and adventure are must-haves for the next place you call home, Chile is a great option.

Chile has one of the longest running programs that encourage people to move there. Start-Up Chile began in 2010 and has had quite a bit of success. The only catch? Entrepreneurs need to create a unique business idea and relocate to Chile within the first 6 months of the program. They also really encourage women entrepreneurs and put a special emphasis on having at least 50% of their leaders being women. I don’t know about you, but I think that is a nice touch! The government of Chile offers the “Startup Chile” program, and it provides funding and support for entrepreneurs to start businesses in the country. The program also offers a one-year visa to entrepreneurs and their families. You can find more information at their website. https://startupchile.org/

Spain

Spain is a country that I would move back to in a heartbeat. The robust culture stole my heart the first time I set foot on its soil. Spain is known for its colorful streets and even more elaborate flamenco dresses. While this country is full of incredible tourist destinations that I recommend everyone see, the charm really lies in getting into the nitty gritty of the culture. Being awakened at 3am every morning to the sounds of people playing guitars and singing in the park outside of your apartment, stopping for a fresh baguette on your way home, finding a hole in the wall bar with live music, sharing tapas with friends on a Friday night, and dancing until 7am on the weekend. Can you tell I am smitten?

My personal opinions aside, Spanish culture is truly vibrant. Barcelona is home to Antoni Gaudi and his incredible architecture. Guell park and the Gothic district are must-sees if you are visiting the Catalonia region. If you find yourself in the south, Andalucía has some of the most beautiful beaches, the best food, and my favorite Spanish dialect. No matter where you find yourself in the country, you will be welcomed by warm people, incredible art, and awe-inspiring scenery.

If you are thinking of relocating to Spain, some regions, such as Galicia and Asturias, offer financial incentives for people to move and settle in their communities. These incentives can include cash grants, subsidized housing, and tax breaks. A small village called Ponga is trying to repopulate their town by offering couples to move there. It is one of the countries that will pay you to move there and start your family. They are giving each couple 3000 euros to move there and an additional 3000 euros for each child born there. There is the stipulation that the family needs to commit to living in the village for 5 years.

Ireland

If Irish coffee, Guinness, or the Emerald Isle are more your speed, Ireland might be on your radar. Irish culture isn’t just known for its whisky, although it is popular around the world. The country is also well known for its rich culture, scenic coastlines, and quaint towns. You will find everything from abrupt cliffs to lush green landscapes. The main cities are Dublin, Cork, Limerick. If you’re into Viking history, the small town of Waterford was settled by a group of Viking raiders in 853 making it the oldest town in the country. It is also most recently known for Waterford Crystal which gained popularity in the 1700’s.

There are many tourist sites around the country as well. The cliffs of Moher are quite impressive with their towering, sheer cliff sides. Grafton Street in Dublin is a popular tourist destination as well, not only for its shopping, but also for its cafe culture. Stop for a cup of coffee and a traditional Irish breakfast and just take it all in. It’s a whole vibe.

The Rock of Cashel is the top heritage site of the country. A 15th century castle is surrounded by a Gothic cathedral, the High Cross and Romanesque Chapel as well as the restored Hall of the Vicars Choral. This group of impressive medieval buildings all sit on top of a limestone rock foundation.

Last but not least, the Blarney Castle and Blarney Stone. Who hasn’t heard of the Blarney Stone? This is one of the country’s most famous tourist attractions and is truly a ‘must-see’. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, this castle was built over 600 years ago. Dare to hang your head over the parapets to kiss the stone and it is said that you will be given the gift of eloquence and persuasiveness.

All of the incredible attractions aside, Ireland is also one of the countries offering a financial stipend for those wanting to relocate. The stipulations for this offer are geared toward entrepreneurs who are willing to start a business in Ireland. They even offer relocation support, advice and mentoring, as well as business funding. Enterprise Island is the organization that you would need to contact if this sounds right for you. More information can be found on their website. www.enterprise-ireland.com/

Italy

Italy….need I say more? This beautiful and historic country is home to some of the most beautiful art, interesting fashion, not to mention film, opera and literature that have been raved around the world. The people are inviting and very warm in nature. While there are always exceptions to this, they are generally very welcoming and kind. Italy also has an affordable cost of living and the salaries tend to match. Of course, smaller towns will be more affordable than the larger cities. Milan, Florence and Rome will cost a bit more, but the smaller towns are where you will get a true taste of the beautiful scenery that blankets the countryside. Not only is the cost of living relatively low, the healthcare system is one of the best. They have universal healthcare that is funded by taxes. Because of this it is universal and free.

With all of these perks, I imagine you are already close to being convinced and we haven’t even gotten to the food yet!

Italian cuisine is considered to be one of the top styles of cuisine all around the world. Everyone knows it, and most people enjoy it. What isn’t to like? The coffee, pasta, gelato, risotto and, of course, the pizza are world renowned. Italian food is focused on the freshest ingredients that are often sourced locally and tend to be organic since GMO crops are forbidden in Italy. Mediterranean food is some of the healthiest on the planet, and it is my opinion that the Mediterranean diet has something to do with the extended life expectancy. The life expectancy of Italians is almost 10 years longer than those living in the US. The wine that accompanies the exquisite food is some of the best due to the ideal climate for viticulture.

If I have done my job well, you already have your bags packed and you are ready to go. Now for the really good part. Italy is one of the countries that will pay you to move there and invest in their villages. There are areas of the country that are trying to fight depopulation of their small towns. Some of these areas are quite rural while some of them just have an aging population. Keep in mind that there are typically requirements that include time commitments, business development, and/or investments, most of the areas that are encouraging people to move also include a money stipend. These areas are often changing, so make sure to do your homework before you get on a plane.

It’s important to note that the specific programs and incentives offered by these countries can change over time, so it’s a good idea to do your own research and consult with immigration experts before making any decisions.

If you are thinking of moving abroad, what places top your list? I would love to hear about it!

How To Stop Fear: Common Travel Fears And Techniques To Overcome Them

street, sunset, building-7544046.jpg

Traveling can be a thrilling and enriching experience, but it can also bring up feelings of anxiety and fear. Knowing how to stop fear when it pops up will make all the difference in your travel experience. Whether you are an experienced traveler or planning your first trip, it’s common to have some worries about what you don’t know or what could go wrong. These feelings are completely normal and valid, and most people feel a little nervous or anxious before embarking on a trip. In fact, there are a number of common travel fears that many people experience before and during their travels. Let’s explore some of the most common travel fears and offer some tips on how to manage them.

flight, airplane, passengers-4516478.jpg1. Fear of Flying

The fear of flying is one of the most common travel fears affecting up to 40% of the population. This fear can range from mild unease to a full-blown panic attack. Only 2 to 6% of those people experience aviophobia which is a clinical phobia. For most people, however, the consternation is much milder. No matter where you fall on this spectrum, the good news is that flying is one of the safest modes of transportation, and there are many ways to manage your fear.

To overcome your fear of flying, start by educating yourself about the safety of air travel. Even I get nervous on planes. I know that it is a secure way to get from point A to point B, but my heart still races a little bit when we hit a patch of turbulence. Learn what turbulence is, learn about the various safety features of airplanes, how they are maintained, and how pilots are trained. Knowing that turbulence is just a change in the air around you and rarely causes issues. Having that information will help keep you calm if your plane shifts a bit whilst in flight.

You can also try relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation during takeoff and landing. These are some of my go-to practices when I am traveling. I will also always have a podcast and/or music playlist downloaded as well as a book on hand. Reading a book, watching a movie, writing or listening to music are great ways to occupy your mind. There is nothing wrong with utilizing distraction techniques on yourself to keep your brain quiet. It can be a form of self-care in these situations.

What I don’t recommend is excessive alcohol consumption. Will it distract you from your current stress? Maybe, but it could also cause ones that you won’t be counting on. I have seen many travelers banned from airlines and airports from having one too many and getting rambunctious. If you like to have a glass of wine or a beer before flying, by all means, go ahead. Just keep your head about you and keep it to a minimum. Your future self will thank you.

2. Fear of Getting Lost

The concern about getting lost in a new place is another thing that causes people to hesitate. This hesitation is elevated if you are traveling to a new city or country, if you don’t speak the language or if you are not familiar with the local customs. However, with some planning and preparation, you can minimize the risk of getting lost. The key to knowing how to stop fear really comes down to being prepared.

Before you pack your bags, research the area you will be visiting and make note of any important landmarks, transportation options, police stations and local customs. Download offline maps or invest in a portable GPS device to help you navigate. As an extra precaution, make sure you have a backup plan in case your technology fails. You can also consider hiring a local guide or taking a group tour to guide you around your destination without worrying about where you are going. There are several great tour companies with excellent reputations all over the world. Not only does the risk of getting lost diminish, but you might make new friends as well! I will link some of my favorites below.

3. Fear of Getting Sick

Getting sick while traveling can cause some anxiety, especially if you are traveling to a new and unfamiliar environment. This is a valid concern. To minimize your risk of getting sick, be sure to research any health risks associated with your destination. Each country is different so make sure to take appropriate precautions, such as getting necessary vaccinations, taking probiotics, or taking medication for malaria or other illnesses that might be of concern. I also highly recommend carrying extras of any prescribed medications that you are taking. It is also a good idea to know if, and where, those medications can be found if you end up needing a refill. Check out where the local medical centers are before you go and have their address available if you need it.

One of the most important, and simplest, things you can do is to practice good hygiene habits. Wash your hands frequently and avoid street food and/or tap water in areas where the water quality is questionable. Keep in mind that no matter where you go, your body might take some time to get used to the different foods and bacteria so there might be an adjustment period. If you take appropriate precautions, however, you can minimize, or even avoid, most of these symptoms. Finally, make sure you have adequate travel insurance that covers medical expenses in case you do get sick and carry a basic first aid kit with you.

4. Fear of Being Alone

Traveling alone can be a daunting experience, especially if you are used to having company or support. In spite of that, solo travel can also be a wonderful way to explore the world and gain a sense of independence. I highly recommend it to everyone, even you introverts. You might surprise yourself! In fact, I can almost guarantee that you will.

If this is a big stressor for you, there are ways you can ease yourself into it and prepare yourself if you are wanting to know how to stop fear from creeping in. Start by practicing in small ways in familiar places. You can go to a movie by yourself or head out to eat alone at your favorite restaurant in your hometown. This will help you start to build that confidence and will get you more comfortable with your own company. When you take that next step and book a trip, stay in hostels or other social accommodations where you can meet other travelers. This is another great reason to join a group tour or activity where you can meet people with similar interests. I tend to meet more people solo-traveling than I do when I am on the road with other people. Think about it, if you have your friends, family or significant other with you, you are less likely to branch out and talk to people outside of your group. Use this solo travel experience to explore more about yourself.

(Shameless plug: keep a lookout for upcoming group adventures!)

5. Fear of theft or crime

Ok, this is a topic that we could discuss for hours because it is so common and notably valid. This is especially true for solo travelers or those visiting cities with higher crime rates. How to stop fear about this area is more about being prepared and aware than anything else. To manage this concern, it’s important to take basic safety precautions, such as keeping your valuables out of sight, avoiding walking alone at night and keeping your travel plans to yourself. While some cities are more prone to crime, it is always good practice to be aware of your surroundings at all times and keep your valuables close no matter where you are. I will talk more about actual scenarios that I have heard of from fellow traveling friends as well as ones I have witnessed myself.

Try to avoid ATMs located on busy streets where you will have your back to the crowds. If you are able to, find an ATM that is located inside of a bank or that has cameras around it. In a tourist city, criminals know where these spots are and will be watching to see who isn’t paying attention

Don’t carry all of your cash in one spot. If your wallet does get stolen, it is good to have backup money to get a cab or make a call. Keep a little bit of emergency cash in a hidden jacket pocket, in your shoe, or you could use a bra stash. It might sound silly but I promise it will be a huge sense of relief if a thief does get your wallet. I have to mention here, don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket and don’t have it out for any longer than you need it. Minimizing the opportunities for others to have access to your things is one of the most effective steps you can take to safeguard your valuables.

Consider leaving your wedding rings at home. This goes for any jewelry that you would be devastated about if you were to lose it. When I travel, I wear a silicone wedding ring and leave any flashy jewelry at home. The less attention you draw to your valuables, the better.

amalfi, square, italy-2086949.jpgDon’t leave your phone, wallet, or laptop, unattended on the side of a table. This is especially true for restaurants with outdoor seating. There are skilled thieves that watch for this. Sometimes they will just try to grab and go, and other times they will come up to you to make conversation or try to ‘sell’ you something. I have seen this happen and there isn’t much you can do once they run and lose themselves in the crowd.

Keep your travel plans to yourself. Don’t post about it on social media in real time, and don’t talk to strangers about where you are going next or about what you have planned. We have heard the stories about thieves robbing someone’s home because they knew the people were on vacation based on social media posts, but it is also a concern for your safety if you are tagging your location in posts. Think about the incident with Kim K. and the criminals that knew where she was and what valuables she had. It is always better safe than sorry. Save your posts for a day or two later. You can still show highlights of your travels, just don’t do it in real time.

I will end with this last thought, it is ok to exit a conversation or situation if you are feeling uncomfortable. I know we all want to avoid being rude, but if your alarm bells are ringing, it is best to err on the side of caution and remove yourself from the imposing environment.

6. Fear of the Unknown

The fear of the unknown is a common travel fear that can hold you back from fully embracing new experiences. For some people, staying in around what they know and are comfortable with has been reinforced over the years. Travel, however, is all about exploring that which is new to you and stepping out of your comfort zone.

Start by embracing the mindset of a traveler and approaching each new experience with an open mind and a sense of curiosity. Be willing to try new foods, engage with locals, and explore new places. Remember that the best travel experiences often come from stepping out and trying something new. If you are experiencing anxiety over this, know that it is a normal reaction, but not one that can’t be overcome. Do your research ahead of time and learn as much as you can about your destination and the local customs and etiquette there.

As you can see, there are a number of common travel fears that many people experience before and during their travels. Knowing how to stop fear might not be able to completely eliminate it, but by preparing ahead of time, having a plan, practicing self-care, and taking basic safety precautions, you can manage them and fully enjoy all that travel has to offer. You might be sensing a pattern here and you are right. Information is your best friend when it comes to tackling any fear or anxiety. Learning these skills now will not only reward you with better travel experiences, but also carry over to other areas of your life as well. Remember, the rewards of travel far outweigh the risks!

Let me know in the comments if you have any great tips that helped you overcome any travel anxieties. #getstamped

Why friends travel together and how to do it successfully

Friends’ trips have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it’s not hard to see why. When friends travel together, there is nothing that quite compares. These kinds of vacations are the perfect backdrop that allows opportunities to bond, let your hair down, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s a quick weekend away or a longer adventure, these trips are a fantastic way to escape the stresses of everyday life and indulge in some much-needed relaxation and fun. Whether you’re in college or have been working for years, taking a break to travel with your pals is a great way to recharge and have some fun.

Here are a few reasons why friends travel in groups and why you might want to get your calendar out and call your best friends.

  1. Reconnect with friends: Life gets busy, and it can be challenging to stay in touch with all of your friends. We try our best to keep up with one another, but life happens. Days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months. The next thing you know, five years have gone by and you haven’t had a good belly-laugh in way too long. Getaways with your friends are the perfect opportunity to catch up with each other, compare which new plants you added to your growing collection, laugh until it hurts, and make new memories.
  2. Relax and recharge: A vacation is a chance to escape your daily routine and take a break from your job and regular responsibilities. This is especially helpful if you are going through a rough patch. Your friends are who are there for you to help you get through particularly tough times. They are who you can rely on to lend an ear and/or a shoulder. Getting together in a relaxing location is what the doctor should be ordering. Simply being around your allies allows you an opportunity to let loose, relax, and recharge your mental and emotional batteries. This is a magical combination that will help you to feel refreshed, newly armored and ready to tackle whatever life throws at you next.
  3. Explore new places: Traveling with your friends is one of the best opportunities to discover new destinations, try new foods, and experience new cultures. What is a better way to bond than over salsa dancing, scuba lessons or high quality sushi? Whether you’re looking for a high energy adventure or low key relaxation, a journey together can take you to exciting places that you might not have otherwise visited.
  4. Strengthen your bond: Spending quality time with your favorite companions is a great way to strengthen the bond you have with each other. You can share more recent experiences, learn more about each other’s lives, and create memorable moments that, I promise, you will still be talking about in five years. There is an added bonus if you make new friends on the trip. While inviting people who didn’t know each other before the trip can cause a little hesitation, it can turn out to be an opportunity to get to know people you might otherwise never run into. Is there potential for disaster? Sure. But what if you get to meet an amazing human who ends up being the missing addition to the group that you didn’t know you needed? That, I can tell you, is priceless.
  5. Empowerment and support: When you have a great group of friends, simply being around them is an extremely empowering experience. You’ll have their support and motivation to try new things, take risks, and step out of your comfort zone. Especially when you have friends who cheer you on. Hearing ‘Damn girl, now that’s an outfit!’ brings out a unique type of confidence. Women rallying for other women is powerful. People supporting people is a recipe for potent joy. While everyone of you should already be aware of how much you bring to the table, just having that extra self-esteem boost can really make your day.

Planning group travel can be a lot of fun in and of itself. You and your friends can spend hours brainstorming ideas, browsing travel blogs and Instagram feeds, and finding inspiration for the perfect destination (not to mention deciding on the outfits to go with it). Perhaps you’re daydreaming of drinking mojitos on a tropical beach getaway, shopping and sightseeing in a big city, or hiking the trails on an outdoor adventure in the mountains. The possibilities are endless, and the choice is all yours.

Once you’ve settled on a destination, it’s time to start planning the logistics. From flights and accommodation to activities and dining, there are many things that you need to consider. Depending on your budget and priorities, you might opt for a luxurious hotel or a budget-friendly hostel, gourmet meals or casual street food, spa treatments or free outdoor adventures. Whatever you choose, make sure you’re all on the same page and everyone has a say in the plans. Flexibility and respect for each others’ time and interests are key to a smooth trip when friends travel with each other, especially for the first time.

So, now that you’re looking up plane tickets and checking your bank account, I will list out a few steps that will help to get you packing that suitcase. Being convinced that a getaway with your favorite people is a great idea wasn’t the difficult part, now the question is, what are some of the important things that you need to consider when planning one?

Things to consider when planning a trip with friends.

  1. Reach out to friends: Since the ‘friend’ piece of this puzzle is the most important element of a friends trip, let’s start there. Who do you want to plan this trip with? Do you want a smaller group or go all out and invite everyone? Keep in mind that the smaller the travel party, the easier the logistics. Regardless, either type of trip can be done successfully. It might just require a little extra finesse and patience with a larger group. It is also important to keep in mind what kind of trip your group is looking to have. Do you want a luxury hotel or a cabin in the forest? Different people have different interests, and budgets. Flexibility is key, however, if your main goal is to just hang out with your girls, you will quickly realize that location will be secondary.
  2. Choose a destination: Once you have a few people committed to this idea, it is time to start brainstorming about where you all might want to go. The destination will depend on your budget, interests, and travel style. Whether you’re looking to lounge under an umbrella while looking at the ocean, catching the new Broadway shows, or exploring ancient ruins in an old city, there’s a destination that will fit whatever you are looking for. Get a group chat going to get an idea of the overall vibe. After your group has that part clear, have everyone put in a couple of options for you all to discuss and vote on. Communication is crucial here. Keep in mind everyone’s needs and budget and know that, even if the group doesn’t end up choosing one of your suggestions, it is only that much more of an adventure for you.
  3. Set a budget: Be clear about how much you’re willing to spend on the trip. This will help you to choose the destination, accommodation, and activities. It is imperative that this is discussed regularly throughout the planning process. Check in with each other every couple of weeks to make sure everyone is staying on the same page.
  4. Pick a date: Find a time that works for everyone, and make sure that you give enough notice so that everyone can plan accordingly. Everyone’s schedules are different and busy in their own right. This is another area where patience and flexibility can make the difference between a good planning experience or a stressful one. Be respectful of each other’s lives and priorities and you will be able to narrow down a time that works for everyone.
  5. Plan activities: Research the destination and plan activities that you’ll all enjoy. This could include spa treatments, dancing, local cuisine, sightseeing, hiking, extreme sports, or cultural experiences. A new trend that I am seeing when groups of friends travel together is to schedule some unscheduled time. I, personally, love this trend! While some of you might thrive on a strict timeline, others might just want to take it easy and see where the day carries them. You don’t have to do everything together every day. Your group gets to make the rules of this vacation so do whatever works for all of you.
  6. Consider accommodation: Choose accommodation that is comfortable and meets everyone’s needs. You could opt for a hotel, airbnb, a vacation rental, or a hostel, depending on your budget, timeline and preferences. Read the reviews, ask Reddit, google local information on the area, and then read the reviews again. This is one tip I give everyone. You never really know what a place is going to be like until you get there, but you can prepare yourself as well as you can by doing a little research ahead of time. Regardless of where you end up staying, being safe and together is your main objective.

One of the most important aspects of a successful group trip experience is communication, communication, communication. Make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to expectations, budgets, and schedules. It’s also a good idea to establish ground rules early on, such as what activities everyone wants to participate in and which ones the group may split up for. This can help avoid any potential conflicts or misunderstandings that might otherwise ruin a good day.

Once all of the planning is done and you have all arrived to your destination, you will find that the best thing about trips with your crew is that they allow you to be yourself and let your hair down in a way that you might not be able to do in your everyday life. Whether you’re dancing the night away in a club, lounging on a beach, or indulging in some retail therapy, you can do it all without any judgment or pressure. Friends’ trips are all about having fun, coming up with new inside jokes, making memories, and creating an experience that you’ll look back on with a smile for years to come.

With a little planning and preparation, you can create an unforgettable experience that you’ll all cherish for years to come. Going on adventures with a fun group is a wonderful way to take a break from the stresses of everyday life, have some fun with your friends, and create memories that will last. They’re all about indulging in the things you love, letting loose for a few days, and strengthening your relationships. So why not start planning your trip today? Who knows what adventures await you!
